Field of View in Overwatch 2 determines how much of the battlefield you can see at any moment. The right FOV makes the difference between catching a flanking Tracer in your peripheral vision and getting eliminated without warning. How to Use the Overwatch 2 FOV Calculator
The calculator has six inputs. Fill them in order from top to bottom and hit Calculate FOV. Every field is explained below so you know exactly what you are entering and why it matters.

Current FOV Slider
Set this to your current in-game FOV. The slider runs 80–103 in 0.5° steps, matching OW2’s resolution. Leave at 103 if starting fresh.

Aspect Ratio (Current and Target)
Match Current AR to your monitor, and Target AR to what you’re converting to. Leave both at 16:9 if you’re not changing aspect ratio — Converted FOV will equal your current value.

Resolution and Monitor Details
Used only for the PPD (Pixels Per Degree) calculation — no effect on FOV recommendations. Monitor size and viewing distance are optional context fields.

Role
Sets the base recommended FOV. Tank and Support start at 103 (awareness-first). Damage and Flex start at 100 (precision balance). Also filters which heroes appear in the picker.

Hero (Optional)
Overrides the role base with hero-specific tuning. Scope heroes (Widowmaker, Ashe, Hanzo, Sojourn, Ana) trigger a warning to set Zoom Sensitivity separately. Leave blank for a role-level recommendation.

Understanding Your Results
After clicking Calculate FOV, the results panel shows eight metric cards, a recommendation box, three warning boxes, a visual FOV arc, and three data tabs. Here is what every number means.
Recommended FOV
The FOV the calculator recommends for your role, hero, and playstyle combination. This is the number you enter in OW2 under Options → Video → Field of View. Derived from a role base, adjusted by hero override and playstyle offset, then clamped to 80–103.
Converted FOV
Your current FOV converted to the target aspect ratio. If both ratios match, this equals your current FOV. Values marked with an asterisk exceed OW2’s 103 cap — the game cannot render them.
Vertical FOV
The vertical angle of your recommended FOV. vFOV is aspect-ratio-neutral — two monitors on different ARs running FOV 103 share the same vFOV of 70.53°. The difference is purely how much extra horizontal world the wider screen adds.
Visibility Gain
Percentage difference between recommended and current FOV: (rec − current) ÷ current × 100. Positive = more world per frame. Negative = narrower view, crisper targets.
Peripheral Gain
Raw degree difference between recommended and current FOV. A gain of +3° means your new FOV shows 3 more degrees on each side — directly widening your flank detection window.
Pixels Per Degree (PPD)
How many horizontal pixels your monitor devotes to each degree of your recommended FOV: horizontal resolution ÷ FOV. Higher PPD = crisper targets at range. Ratings: Excellent ≥ 20, Good ≥ 16, Acceptable ≥ 13, Low below 13.
Awareness & Precision Scores
Two 0–100 indexes showing the tradeoff between peripheral coverage and aim precision at your FOV. Use as a relative indicator when comparing configs — not absolute performance numbers.
Relative Zoom
Your current FOV as a percentage of the recommended FOV: current ÷ recommended × 100. Below 100% = narrower than recommended. Above 100% = wider, more awareness, smaller on-screen targets.
The Three Result Tabs
Cross-game tab Converts your current FOV to six other games. Valorant and Apex share OW2’s HFoV-on-16:9 convention so numbers transfer directly. CS2 references 4:3, Fortnite caps at 100, Battlefield exposes vFOV.
AR conversion tab Shows your current FOV converted to all five aspect ratios simultaneously. Values marked with an asterisk exceed OW2’s 103 cap.
PPD analysis tab Shows your recommended FOV’s pixel density across four resolutions. The “yours” marker highlights your selected resolution for instant comparison.
The FOV Arc Visualizer
The canvas below the results shows two overlapping arcs: grey for your current FOV, lime for the recommendation. The angular gap between the two ray pairs equals half the Peripheral Gain shown in the metrics. If the arcs overlap exactly, your current FOV already matches the recommendation. If the lime arc is noticeably wider, the peripheral advantage of switching is meaningful enough to feel in-game within a few matches.

The Math Behind the Calculator
Every number the calculator produces comes from two core trigonometric identities. Understanding these lets you verify any result manually and convert FOV for any game or aspect ratio beyond the ones in the dropdowns.
HFOV to VFOV
FOV is an angle. Your monitor is a rectangle. The relationship between horizontal and vertical angle is determined by the aspect ratio. The formula uses the tangent function because FOV describes a cone, and tan(half-angle) tells you how much world fits at a given distance from the viewer.
VFOV = 2 x atan( tan(HFOV / 2) x (Height / Width) )
Convert degrees to radians first: radians = degrees x (PI / 180)
Example: HFOV 103 on 16:9 → 2 x atan( tan(51.5°) x (9/16) ) = 2 x atan(0.7072) = 70.53° VFOV
VFOV to HFOV
The reverse operation uses the same identity with the ratio inverted. This is how the calculator converts between aspect ratios: first to VFOV (aspect-ratio-neutral), then back to HFOV at the target ratio. You cannot skip this step — the relationship is nonlinear because of the tangent, so a direct ratio multiplication gives the wrong answer.
HFOV = 2 x atan( tan(VFOV / 2) x (Width / Height) )
Width / Height as decimal: 16/9 = 1.778 | 21/9 = 2.333 | 4/3 = 1.333
Example: VFOV 70.53° back to 16:9 → 2 x atan( tan(35.27°) x 1.778 ) = 103°
Full AR Conversion: Worked Example
OW2 FOV 103 on 16:9 → CS2 equivalent on 4:3
Step 1 — convert to VFOV
VFOV = 2 x atan( tan(51.5°) x (9/16) ) = 70.53°
Step 2 — convert VFOV to HFOV on 4:3
HFOV = 2 x atan( tan(35.27°) x (4/3) ) = 86.6°
Result: OW2 103 on 16:9 = CS2 86.6 on 4:3. Same vertical view. Different horizontal width.
Pixels Per Degree Formula
PPD = Horizontal Resolution / HFOV
Linear approximation — accurate for practical use across the 80–103 range.
1080p FOV 103 → 1920 / 103 = 18.6 PPD | 1440p FOV 103 → 2560 / 103 = 24.9 PPD
1080p FOV 80 → 1920 / 80 = 24.0 PPD | 4K FOV 103 → 3840 / 103 = 37.3 PPD
A hero torso occupies roughly 5–6 degrees of horizontal angle at 10 metres in OW2. At 18.6 PPD that is around 93–112 pixels wide. At 24.9 PPD the same torso covers 125–149 pixels — a 35% increase in target pixel width without touching any graphics setting. This is why upgrading from 1080p to 1440p typically has more impact on aim than any FOV adjustment.
Sensitivity Recalibration Formula
When your current and recommended FOV differ by 5 degrees or more, the calculator shows a yellow warning. FOV and effective sensitivity are directly coupled — a wider FOV means each degree of mouse movement covers a smaller fraction of your screen. To preserve identical mouse feel after a FOV change:
New Sensitivity = Old Sensitivity x (Old FOV / New FOV)
Preserves degrees-per-millimetre of mouse movement across the FOV change.
Example: sensitivity 5.0 at FOV 95, moving to FOV 103
New = 5.0 x (95 / 103) = 4.61 → round to 4.6 and fine-tune from there

Which Value Is Best?
Tank FOV
Tanks benefit most from maximum FOV. Running at 103 allows you to simultaneously track your whole team, identify incoming threats from the flanks, and manage ability cooldowns relative to what’s happening around you. Most high-level tank players run 100–103.
Damage (DPS) FOV
DPS players face a genuine tradeoff. Hitscan heroes like Widowmaker, Ashe, and Sojourn perform better with slightly lower FOV (95–100) because reduced FOV makes distant targets appear larger. Flankers like Genji, Tracer, and Sombra benefit from higher FOV (100–103) because situational awareness matters more than target pixel size. Use the hero picker in the calculator for a hero-specific recommendation.
Support FOV
Supports should typically run 100–103. Healers need to identify which teammate requires attention, spot incoming threats, and position around cover before an enemy closes in. Maximum FOV keeps more information visible per frame.

Long sightlines favour slightly lower FOV (97–100) for hitscan heroes — targets appear larger and are easier to track at range.
Corridor maps

Sudden close-quarters engagements make FOV 100–103 a clear advantage through doorways regardless of hero.
Push maps
(Esperanca, Colosseo, New Queen Street):
Maximum FOV is broadly beneficial — you frequently face threats from multiple angles in tight spaces around the robot.

Bronze to Gold
Players often run 90–100. Lower FOV makes targets look bigger which feels like improved aim — but the awareness cost at these ranks is more damaging than the precision gain is helpful.
Platinum to Diamond
The shift toward 100–103 begins here as players develop enough game sense to use the additional peripheral information. Flankers in particular see a noticeable survival improvement at maximum FOV.
Masters & above
Virtually all players run 100–103. Positioning decisions are more punishing and reaction windows are shorter — awareness consistently outweighs the marginal precision gain of lower FOV. Professional players almost universally run 103.

FOV & Sensitivity in Overwatch 2
Changing FOV affects effective sensitivity. If you change by 5 degrees or more, multiply your current sensitivity by (old FOV ÷ new FOV) as a starting point, then fine-tune. Scoped heroes have an additional variable: the Zoom Sensitivity Multiplier under Settings → Controls → Hero-specific is not linked to the global FOV slider and must be adjusted separately for Widowmaker, Ana, Ashe, Hanzo, and Sojourn.

Common FOV Mistakes
Running below 95
Values below 90 create tunnel vision that makes positioning reads actively dangerous for any role.
Not recalibrating sensitivity
A jump from 95 to 103 without adjustment makes your aim feel loose until you compensate.
Forgetting zoom sensitivity
The global FOV slider does not touch scoped sensitivity. Set it separately for each scoped hero you play.
Mismatching resolution and AR
Selecting 3440×1440 resolution but leaving AR at 4:3 gives inconsistent PPD results. Always match your resolution to your actual aspect ratio.

Video Settings That Interact with FOV
Render Scale. Anything below 100% reduces effective PPD across your full FOV even at high display resolution. Keep it at 100% for competitive play.
Dynamic Render Scale. Automatically drops render scale during teamfights — exactly when you need consistent visual information. Disable it and lock at 100%.
Anti-Aliasing. MSAA 2x or higher sharpens target silhouettes at range, partially compensating for reduced target pixel count at FOV 103. FXAA introduces blur that works against the clarity benefits of optimal FOV.

- Open Overwatch 2 and go to Options from the main menu
- Select the Video tab
- Scroll to the Field of View slider
- Drag to your target value or type a number between 80 and 103
- Click Apply to save
- Test in Practice Range for at least 10 minutes before returning to ranked
Overwatch 2 Console FOV
PlayStation and Xbox offer the same 80–103 slider under Options → Video → Field of View. Controller aim assist partially compensates for the reduced on-screen target size at higher FOV, so the precision penalty of running 103 is smaller on console. Most console players benefit from running at or near 103 regardless of hero.

Yes, in most cases. Higher FOV reveals more of the map and gives you more peripheral information per frame. The advantage is clearest for tanks and supports. For precision DPS heroes the optimal value is lower, because wider FOV reduces on-screen target size.
The majority of professional players run FOV at or near the maximum of 103. Some precision DPS specialists — particularly Widowmaker mains — prefer 95–100, but 103 is the most common setting across all roles in competitive and OWL play.
Very high FOV can cause motion sickness in some players, particularly on monitors physically close to the viewer. If you experience discomfort at 103, step down to 95 or 90 and increase gradually over several sessions.
