Why 90 FOV Feels Wrong in THE FINALS

THE FINALS uses vertical field of view — the angle from the top of your screen to the bottom. Most shooters quote horizontal, so the numbers aren’t comparable, and that mismatch causes a very specific, very common problem.

A player arrives from Battlefield or Apex, sets FOV to 90 out of habit, and the game immediately looks fish-eyed. It isn’t a bug or a bad implementation. 90 vertical is 121.3° horizontal on 16:9 — dramatically wider than the 90 they were expecting. The equivalent of a typical “90 FOV” from another shooter is closer to 59–60 vertical here.

The default of 71 already renders 103.5° horizontally, which is a perfectly normal competitive width. Plenty of players raise it further and are happy, but the point is that THE FINALS isn’t starting you off narrow — it just uses a different scale.

Because vertical is the fixed axis, the game is Hor+: your vertical view never changes, and horizontal expands on a wider screen. An ultrawide player at 80 sees noticeably more to the sides than a 16:9 player at 80, with identical coverage above and below.

The default row is highlighted. Note the top of the slider: 120 vertical renders 144° horizontally on 16:9, and over 161° on 32:9 — far beyond what any competitive shooter normally offers. It’s there if you want it, but it’s an extreme setting rather than a target.


“They Nerfed Movement Speed” — They Didn’t

Shortly after launch, THE FINALS was review-bombed on Steam by players convinced Embark had secretly slowed the game down. Embark’s community lead responded that there had been no change to the movement system or movement speed between builds.

What actually happened: settings were reset in that patch, which returned everyone’s FOV to the default of 71. Players who had been running a much wider FOV suddenly found themselves back at the default, and a narrower view makes movement feel slower even when the speed is identical.

Why it matters: FOV is one of the strongest influences on perceived speed in any first-person game. Objects at the edge of a wide frame sweep past faster, which reads as momentum. If THE FINALS ever feels sluggish to you, check your FOV before assuming a patch changed something.


Best FOV by Class

THE FINALS’ three build classes move at genuinely different speeds, and that changes what FOV feels right. These are editorial recommendations, not official settings.

85–100

117–130° horizontal on 16:9. Dashes, grapples and wall-runs demand a wide view to keep the world readable while you move at speed.

80–95

112–125° horizontal. The safest band if you rotate between builds, and comfortable for both objective play and mid-range fights.

75–90

107–121° horizontal. Heavies move slowly and fight close through walls and rubble, so target size beats sweeping peripheral coverage.

70–85

102–116° horizontal. Picking targets across an arena rewards keeping enemies large on screen rather than fitting more of the map in.


Is Higher FOV Always Better?

No — and THE FINALS has a wrinkle most shooters don’t: the arena is destructible, so there’s often more moving geometry on screen than in a static map.

A stronger sense of speed, which suits fast builds. More of the arena visible when a floor collapses beneath you. Earlier warning of a third team arriving. Less tunnel vision during grapples and zip-lines.

Enemies shrink at every distance. Pronounced fisheye above 100 vertical. More geometry rendered per frame in an already destruction-heavy game. Motion discomfort for some players, worsened by the constant camera movement.

FOV does not change hitboxes, recoil or damage. It changes what you see and how large it appears. It does have a modest frame-rate cost, but resolution scaling and effects quality cost far more — start there if you’re chasing FPS.

THE FINALS sits in the vertical-FOV camp alongside Siege, and Tarkov. Call of Duty is the odd one out here with a horizontal slider — which is exactly why a CoD player’s “80” and a FINALS player’s “80” describe completely different views. Convert before comparing with our FOV converter.


Finding Your FOV in THE FINALS

How to change it

Open Settings and go to the Video tab, where you’ll find the Field of View slider. It’s available on PC, PlayStation and Xbox. Note that the in-game slider works in whole steps, so fine-grained values aren’t available through the menu.

Some players edit the game’s config file to set values the slider won’t reach. We’d leave that alone — it requires a hex editor, it resets whenever you touch an in-game slider, and a mistake corrupts the file and wipes all your settings. The precision gained isn’t worth it for FOV.

A method that works

Start from the default 71 rather than jumping to a number you used elsewhere. Play a few full matches, then move in steps of 5. If the game feels sluggish or you keep getting caught by players entering your periphery, go up. If enemies at range have become hard to hit, come down.

Give every change several matches. Any FOV shift feels wrong for the first hour regardless of whether it suits you, because your sense of how far a target sits from centre screen has to recalibrate.

Common mistakes

Setting 90 because that’s your number in other games — in THE FINALS that’s 121.3° horizontal, not 90. Jumping to 120 because it’s the maximum. Copying a streamer’s value without matching their monitor. And blaming a patch for feeling slow when a settings reset simply returned you to the default. Common questions about THE FINALS FOV.

Vertical. The slider sets the angle from the top of your screen to the bottom, and horizontal FOV is derived from your aspect ratio. That’s why the numbers look low compared with games that quote horizontal figures, and why 90 here is far wider than 90 elsewhere.

71 vertical, confirmed by Embark. On a 16:9 monitor that renders 103.5° horizontally, which is already a normal competitive width. If your settings were ever reset, this is the value you were returned to.

Because 90 vertical is 121.3° horizontal on 16:9 — much wider than the 90 you’re used to elsewhere. If you want the equivalent of a typical 90 FOV from another shooter, set THE FINALS to roughly 59–60 instead.

It changes your horizontal FOV, not your vertical. THE FINALS is Hor+, so a wider monitor adds view to the left and right rather than cropping top and bottom. At 80 vertical you get 112.3° horizontal on 16:9 and 125.9° on 21:9.

Modestly. A wider view renders more geometry each frame, and THE FINALS is already destruction-heavy. The cost is small next to resolution scaling or effects quality, so change those first if you’re chasing frames.

You can, but many players don’t. The classes move at genuinely different speeds, so Light often suits a wider view and Heavy a narrower one. The counter-argument is that one consistent value keeps your muscle memory stable across builds. Try a single setting first, then experiment if a class feels wrong.

Convert to a common axis first. Coming from a vertical-FOV game like Siege or Tarkov, the number carries across directly. Coming from a horizontal-FOV game like Call of Duty or Apex, convert their horizontal figure to vertical before setting it here — the calculator above does the maths.

For most players, no. 120 vertical renders 144° horizontally on 16:9 and over 161° on 32:9 — well beyond what any competitive shooter normally offers. Distortion is severe and enemies become very small. It exists for players who want it, but treat it as an extreme rather than a goal.
