Why Siege Uses Vertical FOV
Rainbow Six Siege exposes field of view as a slider from 60 to 90 under Options → Display, and that number is vertical FOV — the angle from the top of your screen to the bottom. Most shooters quote horizontal instead, which is why Siege values look so much lower than everything else.
They aren’t lower. They’re measured differently. Siege’s maximum of 90 vertical works out to 121.3° horizontally on a 16:9 monitor — wider than Apex Legends allows at its own maximum. The default of 60 vertical is 91.5° horizontal, which is roughly the classic “90 FOV” most shooters ship with.
Because vertical is the fixed axis, Siege behaves as a Hor+ game: your vertical view never changes, and horizontal expands to fill a wider screen. An ultrawide player at 84 sees noticeably more to the sides than a 16:9 player at 84, with identical coverage above and below. That’s the number the calculator gives you.

Note how little the horizontal figure moves at the top of the slider. Going from 84 to 90 vertical adds only about 5° horizontally on 16:9, but it costs target size across the whole screen — which is why plenty of strong players stop short of the maximum.

No, Siege 90 Is Not “Low FOV”
The most common mistake new Siege players make is copying an FOV number straight from another game, or assuming Siege is stingy because the slider stops at 90.
Siege 90 vertical = 121.3° horizontal on 16:9. That is wider than Apex Legends allows at its maximum of 110, and far wider than Overwatch 2’s ceiling of 103. Siege is one of the most generous FOV sliders in competitive FPS, not one of the tightest.
Siege 60 vertical = 91.5° horizontal. The default is roughly the classic “90 FOV” most shooters have shipped with for decades. It feels cramped to modern eyes, which is why almost nobody stays on it.
Never copy a number across games. A 103 in Call of Duty is horizontal; a 103 in Siege isn’t even possible. Convert to a common axis first — that’s what the calculator above is for.

These are editorial recommendations, not official settings. The overwhelming majority of professional players run 90, but plenty of strong ranked players deliberately sit at 75–85 for larger heads at range.

102–112° horizontal on 16:9. Heads stay large enough to spot down long sightlines while you learn map geometry and head-level pre-aim.

107–116° horizontal. Anchoring a site means holding one or two angles for a long time, so target clarity matters more than sweeping peripheral coverage.
80–90
Ranked
112–121° horizontal. Roamers arrive from angles you didn’t plan for, and clearing more of a room per peek is worth the small loss in target size.

116–121° horizontal. Entering a site means reading the whole room in one swing. Most pros run 90, though some report a mild fisheye effect at the maximum.

Is Higher FOV Always Better?
No. Siege is a game of pixel-thin head angles, and the trade is sharper here than in almost any other shooter.
What higher FOV gives you
More of a room cleared per peek. Roamers spotted earlier in your periphery. Less tunnel vision during fast rotations and rappels. A better read on multiple angles when you swing into a site.
What it costs you
Heads shrink to very few pixels down long sightlines. Some players report a mild fisheye effect at 90. Slightly more geometry rendered per frame. Motion discomfort for a minority of players.
FOV does not change hitboxes, recoil or damage. It changes what you can see and how large it appears, nothing about the underlying simulation. It also has only a modest effect on frame rate — shadows, texture quality and render scaling all cost far more. If you’re chasing FPS, start there.

Finding Your Ideal Siege FOV
How to change it
Open Options, go to the Display tab, and scroll to Field of View. Siege lets you change it mid-match, which is unusually convenient — you can test a value during a live round rather than only in a custom game. Console players had this locked to 60 for years; a slider arrived in Year 7, so there’s parity now.
A method that works
Start at 84. It sits inside the useful band for nearly every playstyle and gives you a neutral point to move from. Play ten or so rounds, then adjust by 3–5 at a time. If roamers keep appearing beside you with no warning, go up. If you keep losing long-range head duels you feel you should win, come down.
Give every change several matches. Any FOV shift feels wrong for the first hour regardless of whether it’s right for you, because your sense of how far a head sits from centre screen has to recalibrate. Judging after one round tells you about novelty, not quality.
Factor in your display
A 24-inch monitor at arm’s length and a 32-inch panel two feet from your face present completely different images at identical settings. Larger and closer means the screen edges already occupy your peripheral vision, and pushing FOV higher sends information into a zone your eyes aren’t actually reading. On a laptop display the opposite problem applies — heads at 90 become a handful of pixels.
Common mistakes
Jumping straight to 90 because it’s the maximum. Copying a pro’s number without matching their monitor or sitting distance. Changing FOV every few matches so muscle memory never settles. Slightly. A wider view puts more geometry inside the frustum, so the engine draws more each frame. The cost is small compared with render scaling, shadow quality or texture settings. If you’re chasing frames, change those first and leave FOV where it’s comfortable.
Not mechanically. Hitboxes, recoil patterns and damage are unchanged. What does change is how many pixels a head occupies and how far a target sits from centre screen, so your aim will feel different after a change even though nothing in the simulation moved. Give it several matches to recalibrate.
